We've all been there before: that throbbing, pounding pain of a headache. Most of us experience them only every now and then, but some people suffer from chronic headaches, effecting their relationships, work, and over all well-being.

The Root of Headache Pain

Many patients come to us seeking headache pain relief, which is caused by migraines and tension headaches. So, what's the difference? A tension headache begins in the neck and the pain refers to the temples, jaw, and the middle of the back of the head. Tension headaches can be pounding and cause intense pain. Fortunately, they respond well to chiropractic care.

Many people falsely categorize all sever headaches as migraines. But migraines are a special type of headache that has vascular and/or neurological components. For those suffering from migraines, they have often have one without even having a headache! Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, speech problems, and even seeing weird spots floating in the visual field. People suffering from severe migraines can even appear to be having a stroke! Depending on the type of migraine a person is suffering from, what triggered it, and how severe it is, they frequently respond to chiropractic.

Relief from Headache Pain through Chiropractic

By gently improving the spine's alignment the natural curve of in the neck, chiropractic can help relieve pain caused by headaches. Chiropractic care also encourages better movement in  the bones of the spine. When these two things occur, the nerves that come out of the spine and control muscles are able to fire more effectively. That leads to the return of normal muscle tone, and muscles that may have been spasming before an adjustment should start to relax. Those muscle spasms refer pain to the head. When that occurs, it is called a trigger point. A trigger point (which can happen anywhere in the body) is a knot in the muscles that will refer pain to other places. Tension headache pain is commonly the result of trigger points in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.
